In order to get less shrinkage of the mud i usually use a spritz bottle to spray over the surface im going to mud,including drywall joinds and screw heads.Not only that the wall will suck in the water instead of the mud. It also helps your blade do a smoother job and flare out your joints beautiful. it also lets your mud dry slower which reduces cracking or spider webbing. .
